As part of our expanding Honda platform product range, AIRTEC Motorsport is proud to launch our intercooler kit for the FL5 Civic Type R, suitable for track or fast road use.

In order to ensure there is no noticeable loss of performance during long periods of hard driving, we have developed a larger, smoother intercooler that is a direct replacement for the smaller, more restrictive OEM item.

Our solution to increase the size and performance of the intercooler within the constraints of the limited space behind the bumper is based on a wider, taller and deeper core design.

This offers a huge 158% increase in overall capacity compared to the original intercooler, as well as a substantial 30% increase in frontal area compared to standard, allowing you to make the most of the airflow provided. Importantly, we chose not to use a full-height intercooler as this would not allow for an upgraded oil cooler in the future, so looking at the bigger picture for a complete cooling package, we chose a slightly taller and wider core, but twice as deep. This still allows for a huge increase in performance, also allowing for an upgraded oil cooler.

The intercooler inlet and outlet dimensions also increase from 55mm inlet and 59mm outlet to 65mm inlet and 70mm outlet, an increase of nearly 20% to further improve flow and can be used with the stock piping or our larger diameter AIRTEC Motorsport cold side boost pipe. The tubing also replaces the original O-ring flanges with larger silicone tubing to improve flow and increase internal area.

Together with our high-flow one-piece molded cast end tanks and an internal air diverter to ensure flow is directed correctly and efficiently, the AIRTEC Motorsport intercooler offers much greater efficiency and volume than standard.

Available in a high quality black powder coated finish, the complete kit is a direct replacement and comes with Pro Hoses silicone connectors, all fixtures and fittings, as well as detailed fitting instructions.

Its improved cooling efficiency and ease of mounting make it an essential modification for all modified Civic Type R FL5 models.

""I did three consecutive power runs to get detailed logs showing intake temperature variations during full-load power runs that took approximately 12.5 seconds from 30 mph to the limiter. After each run, the car was allowed to slow to a stop, give 30 seconds to idle, then run the next run.

The first run tends to stabilize things, but the differences before and after are conclusive enough that the benefits of a quality intercooler are irrefutable.

Original intercooler:
run 1
intake air temperature (IAT) at the filter – 22 °C, which remained stable within a couple of degrees throughout all tests.
IAT to throttle body after intercooler – Starting: 30°C. Fine: 67°C.

Run 2
IAT on throttle body after intercooler – Starting: 42°C. Fine: 82°C.

Run 3
IAT on throttle body after intercooler – Starting: 42°C. Fine: 83°C.

AIRTEC Motorsport: run 1
IAT to throttle body after intercooler – Starting: 27°C. Fine: 25°C. (Basically so efficient that it takes a while to start heating up)

Run 2
IAT on throttle body after intercooler – Starting: 29°C. Fine: 39°C.

Run 3
IAT on throttle body after intercooler – Starting: 36°C. Fine: 47°C.

In conclusion, the AIRTEC Motorsport intercooler is giving a resulting drop of 40°C compared to the stock setup which becomes oversized very quickly as you can see the rate of temperature increase on the attached logs from each run.

It""s also worth pointing out that you start to get a big reduction in torque targeting as soon as IATs get above 30°C, so if you""re pushing hard on the road or especially on the track, getting an intercooler is pretty much a must-have option.

80°C IATs are pretty scary to be honest and it""s a worse situation as you won""t normally see long runs with hard loads like we do on the dyno, so you""ll be lifting and temperatures will drop a little, but it""s a good example of how much more efficient and effective a good intercooler setup is for maintaining your car""s performance.

The assembly is much simpler than the previous FK8 and it is not necessary to remove the complete underbody.
