The S55 turbo engine that powers the BMW M2C/M3/M4 F8X uses a top-mounted water-cooled intercooler instead of a “normal” air-cooled intercooler. This OE intercooler has a Tube&Fin core with blocked plastic end tanks. This construction has its disadvantages as it is prone to cracks and starts to leak coolant into the engine or lose boost pressure from the tank seals.
The final do88 design resulted in a bar and plate core with TIG welded cast aluminum end tanks. 85% larger core than OEM which reduces (16% less) charge air pressure drop and maintains drop-in installation without modification. Decreasing the charge pressure drop across the intercooler has several advantages, for example the turbos have to work less to reach the target boost / lower the temperature / improve throttle response. On the cooling water side there is a double-pass flow structure that allows the coolant to flow through the core twice before exiting the intercooler instead of the OE single-pass structure.
There is a high-density staggered cooling fin on both the air and water sides. Several tests were performed to find the optimal balance between the air and water fins to achieve maximum heat transfer. This gives this intercooler a huge increase in active cooling area compared to the OE.
Significant benefits with the do88 high-performance intercooler (stock comparison numbers):
– 13 HP peak power gain! Measured on cars with BootMod3 Stage 1 tuning.
– Highest mid-range power gain of 25 HP!
– Maximum torque gain of 52 Nm!
– Larger core volume: 5657 cm3 (3052 cm3), 85% larger!
– Airflow at 0.025bar/0.36psi pressure drop: 298 CFM (256 CFM), 16% more!
– Lower post intercooler air temperature under the same conditions: 39°C (48°C), 9°C less!*
* Measured at 240 km/h during full throttle acceleration 0-240 km/h on the air track. Both tests were performed on the same day under the same conditions.
