As part of our expanding Mk4 Focus ST product range, AIRTEC Motorsport are proud to launch our secondary intercooler kit for track or fast road use.
The Challenge Due to the limited space available in the upper grille area due to the car""s intake system and ducting, it is not possible to fit a full size front mount intercooler to fill the entire height of the grille. Although we offer a deeper intercooler upgrade (AIRTEC Motorsport Intercooler Upgrade for Focus ST Mk4), we have still looked at other ways to improve cooling and reduce charge temperatures without having to trim or modify the car.
The SolutionDesigned and developed at AIRTEC""s UK headquarters, our solution was to develop a secondary intercooler which mounts under the car behind the underbody and is fed fresh air from a duct. By adding a second intercooler in place of the piping section, we were able to offer a huge increase in overall capacity to the entire setup without impacting the original (or upgraded by AIRTEC Motorsport) intercooler.
Despite this huge improvement, the kit fits perfectly behind the underbody and can be brought back to standard without any problems. The complete assembly kit includes Pro Hoses silicone hoses along with all necessary fixtures and fittings, as well as step-by-step instructions.
Tests measured on heat rejection levels and intake temperatures during back-to-back road tests for eight consecutive runs showed that with the secondary intercooler in place, heat rejection improved by 41 percent while charging temperatures were reduced by half, proving that the setup worked effectively and efficiently.
