The GR Yaris Intake was developed through extensive data logging of temperatures, flow rates and dyno testing. Since this is a turbocharged engine, heat and volume were key considerations during development. This intake system was developed to offer the highest possible flow rate while maintaining the lowest possible intake temperatures. Each component has been designed to provide the turbo with a smooth and smooth ride. By ensuring a sealed system we have improved the IATs of the OEM airbox and at the same time increased the internal volume to reduce pressure drop and therefore reduce turbo pumping losses. This allows the turbo to operate more efficiently and therefore reaches peak boost sooner to produce a net performance gain.
The filter itself has an external diameter of 210 mm or 8.3? with a filtration surface of over 130,000 mm^2. The patented Venturi housing was designed to provide the greatest possible internal volume for the GR Yaris and provides laminar flow to the turbo tube.
The Eventuri difference
The GR Yaris Eventuri system uses our patented carbon fiber housing which provides an aerodynamically efficient airflow path from the filter to the turbo. Not just another cone filter with a heat shield, but a unique design that invokes the Venturi effect and maintains laminar flow conditions to reduce drag on the turbo. You can read more about the housing design and how it works HERE .
Dyno testing
Our GR Yaris intake has been tested by various reputable tuners globally who all reported similar results. The first dynamic table is from RaceCal in the UK. Several tests were carried out with the OEM airbox to obtain a repeatable result and then again with the Eventuri intake. The tests were performed on the same day one after the other with the hood closed. The results show an increase in torque and power across the entire rev range, not just at the top, which is why the car feels more responsive and is able to accelerate through the gears faster. Ambient temperatures during this session were 11.9 degrees C for the OEM airbox and 15.6 degrees C for the Eventuri – the temperature increase was due to the dyno cell heating up after running the stock airbox.
Summary of dynamic test results:
The second set of results comes from Hong Kong based Master Tuning Asia who tested the intake against the stock airbox on the same day and this time in hotter conditions of around 32 degrees C. The systems were tested 3 times and all 3 graphs show improvements across the entire rpm range with the third run showing the highest gain as the stock airbox struggled with the IAT.
The filter housing includes our own filter second generation tailor-made, the aluminum inlet cap, the stainless steel bracket and the integrated MAF section. The carbon pod wraps around the rear-mounted filter and smoothly shapes the airflow up to the MAF section which then connects to the rear inlet pipe. This changes the flow path from the OEM airbox where the airflow enters the front of the airbox, changes direction 90 degrees to travel through the panel filter, and then changes direction 90 degrees again to move through the MAF section. Our system is much more direct with the airflow entering the front of the filter housing and moving into the MAF section without abrupt changes in direction. The result is a smoother path from the filter to the turbo inlet pipe and therefore the turbo is able to operate with less resistance.
CUSTOM CONE FILTER
To achieve the highest possible flow rate we have used our largest filter which has an outside diameter of 210mm or 8.3"" and when flow tested with a housing using a 4"" opening it is capable of flowing up to 940 CFM at 28"" H2O. The filter media is ISO tested to ensure filtration is in line with OEM standards and is also dry. Our patented filter housing features a gradual reduction in cross-sectional area as it wraps around the filter and tapers towards the tube thought of as a large velocity stack: Below is a diagram to show the comparison between our patented design and a normal intake system. Our custom-made filters help the airflow move through the housings and allow for a uniform velocity profile as the airflow exits the housings. More details can be read on the Technology and Filters pages.
CARBON CONDUIT
The duct supplies the filter housing with ambient airflow from the front bumper/grille section. We kept the volume as large as possible all the way to the front of the engine compartment and cleared the front of the duct by creating an opening just behind the bumper where the hood would close. This area of the engine compartment remains at room temperature while the car is moving and therefore the intake is able to draw in air without being limited to the small opening behind the grille. We did not extend the duct to the other side of the engine compartment to use the second opening in the grille simply due to the sharp flow angle and space limitation between the engine and the hood latch. Additionally, using the second vent would prevent cold air from entering the engine compartment to help reduce overall heat absorption.
EPDM REAR HOSE AND COUPLER
The final components of the system are the rear inlet hose and EPDM coupler. The OEM back pipe has a sharp internal bend radius and, at high flow rates, this can cause unwanted turbulence which can affect turbo efficiency. We redesigned the rear tube to allow for a smoother curvature that also allows for more optimal placement of the filter housing. To deal with the heat at the rear of the engine, this hose is made of thermoplastic material with fiberglass reinforcement. There is also a CNC machined reinforcement ring on the rear connection where the clamp will attach. This prevents distortion under strong clamping pressure, such as is also used in the OEM hose. The connection between this hose and the filter housing is achieved with a custom made EPDM coupler which allows for vibration and engine movement.
